Case Study

Carrière Les Petons

Walcourt, Belgium

The company Carrière “Les Petons” has joined the project LIFE In Quarries in 2016 for the purposes of improving the management of the biodiversity on their site. The quarry develops strategies to secure and enhance natural habitats through concerted implementation of concrete conservation with temporary and permanent actions. The objective of the project is to develop, manage and maintain the hosting capacity of biodiversity in active quarries. The originality of the project is to anticipate the implementation of biodiversity management measures during the extracting period which is the concept of ‘dynamic biodiversity management’. Pioneer habitats, generated by extractive activity, are exceptional opportunities for the installation and development of rare and threatened populations of pioneer species.
